Remembering Extortion 17

On August 6, 2011, a U.S. Army CH-47D Chinook known by the call sign Extortion 17 was lost during combat operations in Afghanistan. Aboard were 30 American service members, eight Afghan personnel, and a U.S. military working dog. It was the deadliest single incident for U.S. forces during the war in Afghanistan, a loss felt across the military community and by families whose lives were forever changed that day.

But Extortion 17 is more than the story of one final mission. Behind every name was a life, a son, husband, father, brother, teammate, and friend. They served with courage and purpose, leaving behind families, fellow service members, and communities who continue to carry their memories and share the stories of who they were.

At the home of Army Aviation, a CH-47 Chinook bearing the markings of Extortion 17 will become a permanent part of the Army Aviation Museum Foundation’s Memorial Park, a place for Gold Star Families, service members, veterans, and visitors to gather.

More than an aircraft on display, the Chinook will bear the Extortion 17 tail number as a permanent tribute, providing a tangible connection to the lives behind the call sign and creating a lasting place of remembrance where names are honored, stories are preserved, and the legacy of those lost aboard Extortion 17 is carried forward for generations to come.
